Red Dead Online: what to buy at every level, rank by rank

Quick answer
In Red Dead Online, purchases that make money come before purchases that look good. On the player rank side, aim for the Pump-Action Shotgun (rank 5), the Bolt Action Rifle (rank 7) and the Varmint Rifle (rank 8). On the role side, the real turning points are the Medium then Large Delivery Wagon (Trader ranks 5 and 10), the Metal Detector (Collector rank 5) and the Polished Copper still upgrade (Moonshiner rank 10). Later on, aim for the third card slot at rank 40 and the camp Fast Travel Post at rank 65.
Red Dead Online hands out its gear a little at a time, and the Wheeler, Rawson & Co. catalogue can drain your wallet on boots and hats in no time. This guide sorts the purchases that really matter by rank bracket: at each stage, what to buy, why, and what can wait. The roles themselves and their gold bar prices are covered in our Red Dead Online beginner guide.
When a price couldn't be cross-checked, we leave it out.
Two kinds of rank
- Player rank goes up with all the XP you earn (missions, hunting, activities). It unlocks weapons, pamphlets, horse breeds and general gear.
- Role ranks only go up through a role's activities. They give you Role Tokens that unlock that role's tools, which you then pay for in cash.
Unlocking an item doesn't give it to you: it just makes it available to buy. The golden rule is the same as in our beginner guide: cash for what makes money, gold for roles.
The purchase table, by rank
| Item | Unlock (rank) | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Reinforced Lasso | Bounty Hunter 1 | $350: your targets escape far less often |
| Pennington Field Shovel | Collector 1 | $350: essential for digging up collectibles |
| Pump-Action Shotgun | Player 5 | Your first real close-quarters weapon |
| Medium Delivery Wagon | Trader 5 | $500: doubles your delivery capacity |
| Metal Detector | Collector 5 | $700: coins, fossils, buried jewelry |
| Condenser Upgrade | Moonshiner 5 | $825: average-strength moonshine |
| Wilderness Camp | Naturalist 5 | $750: a temporary camp out in the wild |
| Bolt Action Rifle | Player 7 | Accurate and powerful, perfect for big game |
| Varmint Rifle | Player 8 | $72: clean small game kills, Naturalist sedative ammo |
| Schofield Revolver | Player 9 | A harder-hitting revolver for your holster |
| Bow | Player 10 | Silent hunting, small game arrows later on |
| Large Delivery Wagon | Trader 10 | 100 goods per delivery |
| Hunting Wagon | Trader 10 | $875: several large carcasses per trip |
| Bounty Wagon | Bounty Hunter 10 | $875: multiple targets, no escapes |
| Polished Copper Upgrade | Moonshiner 10 | $875: strong moonshine, the best paid |
| Lancaster Repeater | Player 12 | Versatile repeater, fast and accurate |
| Rolling Block Rifle | Player 13 | Long-range precision rifle |
| Special Snake Oil pamphlet | Player 20 | Tonic that restores and fortifies your Dead Eye core |

Ranks 1 to 10: the foundations
The first ranks go by fast, and that's where the most profitable purchases happen.
- Pump-Action Shotgun (rank 5): the first big jump in close-range firepower, useful in missions and bounties alike.
- Bolt Action Rifle (rank 7): the big game hunting weapon of choice. One well-placed shot, one perfect carcass, and Cripps is happy.
- Varmint Rifle (rank 8): only $72, and it covers small game, the Collector's bird eggs up in trees and the Naturalist's sedative ammo, sold by Harriet. A must-buy.
- Schofield Revolver (rank 9) and Bow (rank 10) round out the kit. The bow is still the quietest way to hunt.
- First passive card slot (rank 10): it opens on its own, but the card has to be bought ($50). Come Back Stronger is a good first pick.
On the role side, the first tools arrive at rank 1: the Bounty Hunter's Reinforced Lasso and the Collector's Pennington Field Shovel. At role rank 5, prioritize the Medium Delivery Wagon (Trader) and the Metal Detector (Collector): they're what turn each role from a side activity into a real income.
What can wait: the clothing unlocked at every rank. Your first horse is enough.
Ranks 11 to 20: the tools that multiply earnings
Role rank 10 is the big milestone. The Trader gets both the Large Delivery Wagon (you need the Medium one first) and the Hunting Wagon. The Bounty Hunter unlocks the Bolas ($30) and the Bounty Wagon. The Moonshiner gets access to the Polished Copper Upgrade, which requires the Condenser and lets you produce strong moonshine, the only truly profitable kind.
On the player side:
- Repeating Shotgun (rank 11, $434): often named the best weapon in the game. Save up for it.
- Lancaster Repeater (rank 12): an excellent all-round repeater. The Rolling Block Rifle (rank 13) opens up long range.
- Fishing Rod (rank 14): it finally arrives, along with Live Worms. Fishing on the shore of O'Creagh's Run is still one of the most peaceful breaks in the game.
- Lean-To tent (rank 15, $90): your first camp upgrade. At that price, don't hesitate.
- Litchfield Repeater (rank 18), and your first upgraded stirrups at the same rank.
- Binoculars (rank 20): for studying an animal or scouting a target before you move in.
- Second passive card slot (rank 20) and the Special Snake Oil pamphlet.
Ranks 21 to 40: everyday comfort
This is the bracket where your character becomes really pleasant to play.
- Semi-Automatic Pistol (rank 22, $537): its fast fire rate makes it Dead Eye's best friend.
- Small Game Arrow pamphlet (rank 22): arrows for small game that don't ruin pelts.
- Off-Hand Holster (rank 25): it's what lets you carry two sidearms and dual wield.
- Split Point pamphlet (rank 28): you craft Split Point rounds yourself from regular cartridges.
- Fishing lures (rank 30): Lake Lure, River Lure and Swamp Lure, one per type of water. The Special Spinner follows at rank 37.
- Express ammo (rank 31): for pistols, revolvers, repeaters and rifles. It matters as much as a new gun.
- Upgraded Saddle Bag (rank 32) and the Special Miracle Tonic pamphlet (rank 32).
- Nacogdoches Saddle (rank 35): the saddle guides recommend most often online.
- Springfield Rifle (rank 38, $156): one shot, but serious power at range, for next to nothing.
- Third passive card slot (rank 40): your build is finally complete.
What can wait: the Volcanic Pistol (rank 21) and the Mauser Pistol (rank 34, $600), unless you dual wield.
Ranks 41 to 60: moving upmarket
- High Velocity ammo (rank 41) and special lures (rank 41): Special Lake Lure, Special River Lure and Special Swamp Lure.
- Semi-Auto Shotgun (rank 42, $540): a semi-automatic shotgun, faster to fire in succession than a pump-action.
- Shotgun slugs (rank 44).
- Carcano Rifle (rank 50, $456): a precision rifle built for very long range.
- Hooded Stirrup (rank 54): paired with the Nacogdoches Saddle, it forms the combo most often named the best in online mode for sparing your horse's stamina.
- Poison Arrow (rank 57) and Fire Arrow (rank 60) pamphlets: the first special arrows.
Our guide to the best weapons in Red Dead Online compares all of these guns, with recommended kits for PvE, PvP and hunting.
What can wait: the in-between tents if you're short on cash. None of them earns you more.
Ranks 61 and beyond: full comfort
- Fast Travel Post (rank 65, $700): set up at your camp, it lets you fast travel from home. To us, it's the best comfort purchase in the game.
- White Arabian (rank 66) and Black Arabian (rank 70).
- The explosive pamphlets: Volatile Dynamite (rank 77), Incendiary Buckshot (rank 80), Explosive Slug (rank 84), Express Explosive (rank 90) and Dynamite Arrow (rank 93). Recipes for established players.
Past that point, almost everything left is cosmetic. Buy what you like, you've earned it.
Pamphlets: Dead Eye, healing and hunting
Pamphlets teach you to craft tonics, ammo and bait. Once bought, remember to read them from your satchel, otherwise the recipe isn't activated. The ones worth your money:
| Pamphlet | Player rank | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Horse Ointment | 16 | Heals and looks after your horse |
| Special Snake Oil | 20 | Restores and fortifies your Dead Eye core |
| Small Game Arrow | 22 | Clean small game hunting with the bow |
| Special Horse Medicine | 26 | Stronger healing for your horse |
| Split Point | 28 | Split Point rounds you craft yourself |
| Special Miracle Tonic | 32 | Restores and fortifies all your cores |
| Potent Herbivore Bait | 36 | Draws in herbivores for hunting |
| Potent Predator Bait | 42 | Draws in predators |
| Special Health Cure | 50 | Health tonic |
Special Snake Oil is the Dead Eye pamphlet: it keeps your core topped up during firefights. For the abilities themselves, what matters is your Ability Cards: see our guide to the best Ability Cards.
Satchels and ammo: capacity
In Red Dead Online, a good chunk of your satchel capacity comes from leveling your roles, automatically and for free:
- Bounty Hunter: Tonics Satchel at rank 6, Kit Satchel at rank 9.
- Trader: Ingredients Satchel at rank 6, Materials Satchel at rank 13.
- Collector: Valuables Satchel at rank 16.
- Naturalist: Kit Satchel at rank 3, Tonics Satchel at rank 18.
One more reason to run several roles rather than just one. Our roles farming guide details the best routines.
For ammo, Fences sell Ammo Pouch pamphlets that raise your reserve of regular ammunition, by weapon type. They aren't tied to a rank but they're expensive: save them for when your arsenal is complete. And to carry a second sidearm, what you need is the rank 25 Off-Hand Holster.
Your horse: gear and breeds
- Stirrups first. They unlock in steps: Slim-Line (rank 18), Deep Roper (rank 24), then others up to the Hooded Stirrup (rank 54). Buy the best available before changing saddles, then aim for the Nacogdoches Saddle (rank 35).
- Upgraded Saddle Bag (rank 32): more room on your mount, handy for everything you pick up.
- Breeds unlock with player rank. A few milestones: American Paint, American Standardbred and Appaloosa at rank 21, Hungarian Halfbred at rank 24, Mustang at rank 27, Thoroughbred, Nokota and Tennessee Walker coats at rank 30, Andalusian, Ardennes and Dutch Warmblood at rank 36, Missouri Fox Trotter at rank 58, Gold and Silver Turkoman at rank 60, White Arabian at rank 66.
Don't break the bank right away: your first horse is plenty for the early ranks, and your bond with it matters as much as the breed. Our guide to the best horses in RDR2 covers the breeds in detail.
Your camp: tent and fast travel
You customize your camp through Cripps. Two kinds of purchase have a real effect on your game: the tent and the Fast Travel Post.
| Upgrade | Player rank | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Lean-To tent | 15 | $90 |
| A-Frame tent | 22 | $175 |
| Tall Lean-To tent | 36 | $300 |
| Open-Air Lean-To tent | 49 | $525 |
| Covered Lean-To tent | 55 | $650 |
| Covered tent | 64 | $700 |
| Fast Travel Post | 65 | $700 |
Every tent does the same thing, only better: your cores are fuller when you enter Free Roam, and they refill faster at camp. The Deluxe Campfire ($500) speeds up crafting and adds seating for your posse. Themes, flags and Cripps' outfits are purely decorative, which doesn't stop anyone from loving the ride back to camp at dusk, with Cripps settled by the fire.
What not to waste gold on
What follows is an opinion, not a rule: it's your gold, and a handsome coat is part of the fun too. But this is where it goes up in smoke.
- Gold cosmetics: nice-looking, but they don't earn you anything. At Gus, the Naturalist's trapper, a simple visual variant for a bow costs 12 gold bars, nearly the price of a role.
- Weapons paid for in gold bars: the Elephant Rifle sells for $580 or 24 gold bars. Always pay in cash.
- Card tiers unlocked early: XP comes far more easily than gold.
- Role outfits and saddles: they cost tokens and cash without improving your earnings. Save your tokens for tools.
- Buying without checking sales: monthly events often cut prices on roles and some items. Check the October 2026 bonuses before you spend.
Each role's items, rank by rank
This guide only keeps the big turning points of each role. For the details, with a verdict item by item, every role has its own guide:
- Bounty Hunter: the best unlocks by rank
- Trader: the best unlocks by rank
- Collector: the best unlocks by rank
- Moonshiner: the best unlocks by rank
- Naturalist: the best unlocks by rank
