Quick answer

For the Bounty Hunter, three purchases are enough: the Reinforced Lasso at rank 1 ($350), then the Bolas ($30) and the Bounty Wagon ($875) at rank 10. The rest of the useful progression comes free with the ranks: Focus at rank 3, Eagle Eye+ at rank 7, the satchels at ranks 6 and 9, Ducking at rank 14. The Prestigious License (15 gold bars, ranks 21 to 30) mostly adds targets and cosmetics: save it for later.

Bounty Hunter is often the first role people buy in Red Dead Online, and it is also the one with the most misleading catalogue: outfits, saddles, weapon variants, gun spinning tricks, and somewhere in the middle of it all, three items that actually change your contracts. This guide breaks down what each rank gives you, what is worth your tokens and your cash, and what you can leave for last, Prestigious License included. For the farming routine, keep our roles farming guide close at hand.

How to become a Bounty Hunter

Head to Rhodes to meet the Legendary Bounty Hunter and buy the Bounty Hunter License: 15 gold bars at the standard price. If you missed the cutscene, the license can also be bought from any Bounty Board. Role prices are regularly discounted, so check the catalogue before you pay.

After that, you pick up contracts from those boards, found near sheriff's offices, post offices and train stations. In a posse, every member earns a cut.

Role ranks and Role Tokens: how they work

The role has 20 ranks, separate from your player rank, which only go up with Bounty Hunter XP. Every five ranks you earn a new title: Novice, Promising, Established, then Distinguished. It is the only role that goes further: the Prestigious License adds ten ranks, covered below.

Each rank pays out Role Tokens, two per rank according to the published progression tables. A token doesn't give you anything: it unlocks the right to buy an item, which you then pay for in cash (or in gold bars for a few cosmetics). Skills and satchel upgrades, on the other hand, come with the rank at no cost.

Two practical points:

  • The total number of tokens you earn is exactly enough to unlock everything. No choice is permanent, only the order matters.
  • Items are sorted into kits by tier, but the ones that matter open early: the Tracking Arrow Pamphlet from rank 5, the Bolas and the Bounty Wagon from rank 10.

The kits also include a Bounty Hunter variant of the Bolt Action Rifle ($350), a camp theme ($700), the Delgado Saddle ($525), the Guerrero gun belt and holster, four outfits, and a few accessories priced in gold bars such as the Bullseye Gloves or the Redhart Eyepatch. When a token cost or a price is missing here, it is because sources disagree: trust the in-game role menu.

The Prestigious License: ranks 21 to 30

Once you hold the base license, you can buy the Prestigious Bounty Hunter License from any Bounty Board, for 15 gold bars at the standard price. It adds ten ranks, split into two tiers (Veteran from 21 to 25, Prestigious from 26 to 30), Infamous targets on the boards and three more Legendary Bounties.

Must-haves

Ranked from most to least important.

1. The Reinforced Lasso (rank 1, 1 token + $350). A target tied with the basic lasso often ends up breaking free. The Reinforced Lasso holds them far better. It is your first token, no hesitation, and any Gunsmith sells it.

2. The Bounty Wagon (rank 10, $875). Bought at a Stable, it takes several targets at once, unable to escape unless the wagon is destroyed. Multi-target contracts, a chore on horseback, turn into a simple round.

3. The Bolas (rank 10, $30). A non-lethal thrown weapon that tangles a runner's legs long enough for you to hogtie them. At that price, it is the best value in the role. Tie the target up without delay once they are on the ground.

4. Eagle Eye+ (rank 7) and Focus (rank 3), free. Focus highlights the target in red, along with their trail, in Eagle Eye. Eagle Eye+ keeps Eagle Eye active while you run or gallop. Together, they let you follow a runner without ever slowing down.

5. The satchels (ranks 6 and 9, free). The Tonics Satchel at rank 6, the Kit Satchel at rank 9: the capacity of certain items in them goes up by ten. It is automatic and it helps in everything you do. The Prestigious License adds the Provisions Satchel at rank 24.

6. Ducking (rank 14, free). While aiming on horseback, you duck to the side to break enemy lock-on. Valuable in mounted chases, when your bounty's guards start shooting at you.

7. The Tracking Arrow Pamphlet (rank 5). It teaches you to craft Tracking Arrows, which drain the target's Stamina and make them easier to follow in Eagle Eye. Handy when a target bolts, but the pamphlet costs several hundred dollars (sources disagree on the exact amount): pick it up once cash is no longer tight.

What to skip or buy last

  • Weapon variants (Schofield, Bolt Action Rifle, LeMat): these are visual skins applied at the Gunsmith to a weapon you already own. No extra power, and the LeMat one costs 21 gold bars.
  • Gun spinning tricks: they are free, so there is nothing to weigh up, but they are pure showmanship. A well-judged nod to classic westerns.
  • Outfits, saddles, gun belts and eyepatches: they mark your progress without improving your earnings. The ones priced in gold come last, since your gold goes to roles first.
  • Breton coats: this breed is reserved for Bounty Hunters, in three tiers (ranks 1, 10 and 20). If your current mount suits you, there is no rush.
  • Perception (rank 16): it increases the distance at which you detect bounties on player targets. Pointless outside PvP.
  • The Prestigious License: almost everything in it is cosmetic. Buy it once your other roles are paid for.

The order to spend your first tokens

With two tokens per rank, tokens almost never run short for the essentials. The real brake is cash: the three key items cost $1,255 in total.

  1. Rank 1: the Reinforced Lasso (1 token, $350). Don't spend the other token on an outfit or a weapon variant.
  2. Ranks 2 to 9: save up. Everything that matters here (Focus, Eagle Eye+, satchels) is free. Put $905 aside for rank 10.
  3. Rank 10: the Bolas first ($30), then the Bounty Wagon ($875) as soon as your wallet allows.
  4. After that: the Tracking Arrow Pamphlet, if fleeing targets give you trouble.
  5. Everything else (Breton, outfits, variants, camp theme) once you have tokens with nothing left to do.

How these items help outside the role

  • The larger Tonics and Kit satchels follow you everywhere.
  • Eagle Eye+ works whenever you use Eagle Eye: keeping it active at a gallop also helps you follow an animal's trail.
  • Ducking helps in any fight on horseback, including against other players.
  • The role's gold funds what comes next. Bounties pay in cash and gold, and that gold buys your next roles.
  • Bretons, a strong and muscular breed, remain mounts you can ride anywhere.

The Reinforced Lasso, the Bolas and the wagon only serve on contracts. But the role has character: every Legendary Bounty has its own backstory and its own staging.

The routine reminder

Take a contract, clear out the guards while sparing the target, lasso them and bring them in alive: it pays more. And don't rush: the cash and gold reward goes up for every three minutes you spend on the contract. The full routine and how to stack it with the other roles are in our Red Dead Online roles farming guide.
