Quick answer

In Red Dead Online, weapons unlock with your rank and are then bought with cash. The early trio that changes everything: the Bolt Action Rifle (rank 7), the Repeating Shotgun (rank 11) and the Lancaster Repeater (rank 12). After that, aim for the Semi-Automatic Pistol (rank 22) and the Springfield Rifle (rank 38), then the Semi-Auto Shotgun (rank 42) for close-range PvP.

In Red Dead Online, your arsenal isn't built through a story but through your player rank. Each weapon unlocks at a set rank, then you buy it with cash (RDO$) at a Gunsmith or from the Wheeler, Rawson & Co. catalogue your character keeps in their satchel. Since money is tight early on, buying the wrong gun can set you back hours. This guide tells you what to get, when, and why.

What to know before you buy

  • Rank unlocks, cash buys. Reaching the rank doesn't hand you the weapon: it makes it available for purchase.
  • Dead Eye doesn't slow time online, unlike in Story Mode. Fast, accurate guns benefit more than slow ones, especially with the Paint It Black card (see our guide to the best ability cards).
  • Better ammo unlocks with rank too: Express rounds at rank 31, High Velocity rounds at rank 41 and shotgun Slugs at rank 44. They matter as much as a new gun.
  • Save your gold for roles. Some weapons can also be paid for in gold bars, but your gold is better spent elsewhere, as explained in our Red Dead Online beginner guide.

A quick word on feel: so much of Red Dead's gunplay comes down to weight. Every lever you work and every bolt you pull back has its own animation, and you feel it in the rhythm of a fight. A lever-action repeater and a bolt-action rifle play nothing alike, and that's what makes these choices interesting.

Ranks 1 to 12: your first purchases

The Cattleman Revolver and Carbine Repeater are available from the start. They do the job, but you'll want better fast.

  1. Bolt Action Rifle (rank 7): the most rewarding first purchase. Slow to reload, it's deadly at range, whether against NPCs in missions or for hunting big game. In PvP, keep it for larger maps: up close, its fire rate punishes you.
  2. Varmint Rifle (rank 8): essential if you play Trader or sell pelts. Rabbits, birds, rodents: it leaves clean kills.
  3. Schofield Revolver (rank 9): your sidearm until you find better. Not the fastest, but very accurate, which makes it a headshot machine.
  4. Repeating Shotgun (rank 11): save up for this one. It combines shotgun stopping power with a lever-action system, and stays surprisingly accurate at mid-range.
  5. Lancaster Repeater (rank 12): its in-game description gives it the lowest damage of the repeaters, but its fire rate and accuracy more than make up for it. With Dead Eye, it chains shots beautifully.

The Pump-Action Shotgun (rank 5) is a fine stopgap if you need a shotgun right away. Otherwise, keep your cash for the Repeating Shotgun.

Ranks 13 to 30: stepping up

  • Litchfield Repeater (rank 18): the alternative to the Lancaster, with a big magazine and meatier damage. Opinions are split between the two, so pick the one that suits the way you aim.
  • Semi-Automatic Pistol (rank 22): Dead Eye's best friend. Its fast fire rate lets you land a lot of bullets in very little time, and it reloads quickly.
  • Volcanic Pistol (rank 21): for patient shooters. It hits like a repeater, but its slow fire rate and reload mean the first shot has to land.
  • Fire Bottle (rank 24): it rarely kills outright, but it sets enemies on fire and knocks them over, which helps flush out an entrenched group of NPCs.

The Double-Barreled Shotgun (rank 30, $185) and the Sawed-Off Shotgun (rank 19, $111) also exist. They're strong up close but held back by their capacity: backup weapons rather than priority buys.

Ranks 30 to 50: late-game weapons

  • Mauser Pistol (rank 34): the most expensive gun in the standard catalogue at $600. Low damage per bullet, but rapid fire and a big magazine. It shines when dual-wielded, with the Winning Streak card.
  • Springfield Rifle (rank 38): possibly the best value in the game. At $156, it's a very powerful single-shot rifle, effective at mid and long range, and good for hunting.
  • Semi-Auto Shotgun (rank 42): the close-range PvP shotgun. High fire rate, quick reloads, and it pairs well with Paint It Black for clearing several targets up close.
  • Carcano Rifle (rank 50): the most refined sniper rifle. Only worth it if you really play at long range.

Weapons outside this schedule

Some weapons added after launch don't appear in the rank unlock lists, and we couldn't find two reliable sources agreeing on their exact rank. Check their availability in the catalogue:

  • Navy Revolver ($275): a percussion revolver, often ranked among the powerful but slow revolvers. A good pick if you like to aim.
  • Evans Repeater ($300): according to its in-game description, high capacity, a high fire rate, and devastating at mid and long range.
  • LeMat Revolver ($317): the most expensive revolver in the game.
  • Elephant Rifle ($580 or 24 gold bars): huge stopping power, offset by a tiny magazine and little reserve ammo.

Bows and throwables

The Bow ($124) unlocks early, but sources disagree on the exact rank. It's still a smart buy: it's silent, so it doesn't give away your position, and most arrows can be picked back up, which makes it a very cheap hunting weapon. In competitive modes, a good archer can do real damage.

For throwables, Throwing Knives (rank 8) are for quiet takedowns, and the Tomahawk (rank 36) is deadly when it lands, at the cost of a fairly slow flight.

In PvE, favour volume of fire: a repeater for distance, a shotgun for close quarters. In PvP, burst damage wins: a shotgun for close fights, a powerful rifle for range. For hunting, the right calibre matters more than raw power: use the Varmint for small game, and take careful shots to keep pelts intact.
