Red Dead Online Moonshiner role: the best unlocks by rank

Quick answer
For the Moonshiner, everything revolves around the still: the Condenser Upgrade at rank 5 ($825, 2 tokens), then the Polished Copper Upgrade at rank 10 ($875, 3 tokens), which takes a delivery from under $100 to roughly $220 to $250. Add the rank 6 and rank 12 recipes and the Master Distiller skill at rank 15. The bar, the band and the Toxic Moonshine pamphlet are for fun: buy them last.
Moonshiner is the most laid-back role in Red Dead Online: you start a batch, go do something else, then come back to deliver. But until your still is upgraded, it pays very little. This guide covers what each role rank unlocks, what's really worth your tokens and your cash, and what's purely for fun. For the production routine and how to stack it with other roles, keep our roles farming guide close at hand.
How to become a Moonshiner
The role goes through the Trader. According to Rockstar's announcement, any active Trader who has completed a sell mission or reached rank 5 in the role receives, via Cripps, an invitation to meet Maggie Fike at Emerald Ranch.
Once there, Maggie offers to sell you a Moonshine Shack for 25 gold bars, the same price whatever the location. It's the first purchasable property in the game. You pick from five spots: Bayou Nwa, Grizzlies, Hennigan's Stead, The Heartlands or Tall Trees.
- Which location? The rdr2.org and TheGamer guides both lean towards Tall Trees: the former for its proximity to delivery points and fast travel posts, the latter for its terrain and nearby ingredients. TheGamer advises against the Grizzlies, too steep for a fragile wagon.
- No panic if you pick wrong: moving the shack costs $250.
All that's left is to rescue the cook, Marcel, and collect equipment during the two intro missions. After that, the still is running.
Role ranks and Role Tokens: how they work
The role has 20 ranks, separate from your player rank. Every five ranks you earn a new title: Novice, Promising, Established, then Distinguished.
Each rank pays out Role Tokens, two per rank according to the published progression tables. A token unlocks the right to buy an item from Maggie, which you then pay for in cash. Recipes, the Master Distiller skill and satchel upgrades come with the rank at no cost. The total number of tokens you earn is exactly enough to unlock everything: only the order matters.
As with the other roles, the key items of the second kit can be bought from rank 5, and the Polished Copper Upgrade from rank 10.
The unlock table, rank by rank
| Rank | Item or skill | Cost | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bar Expansion | 1 token + $950 | For fun, buy it late |
| 1 | Norfolk Roadster, Black and Speckled Gray coats | Tokens + $150 | Look at it later |
| 1 | Ivers Saddle | Tokens + cash, price in the catalogue | Skip early on |
| 2 | Berry Cobbler Moonshine recipe | Free with the rank | Bonus |
| 5 | Condenser Upgrade | 2 tokens + $825 | Must-have |
| 5 | Flammable Moonshine | Tokens + $20 | Gimmick |

| 6 | Wild Creek Moonshine recipe | Free with the rank | Must-have |
| 7 | Ingredients Satchel Upgrade | Free with the rank | Useful everywhere |
| 10 | Polished Copper Upgrade (requires the Condenser) | 3 tokens + $875 | Must-have |
| 10 | Norfolk Roadster, Rose Gray and Piebald Roan coats | Tokens + $550 | Optional |
| 12 | Spiced Island Moonshine recipe | Free with the rank | Must-have |

| 20 | Norfolk Roadster, Spotted Tricolor and Dappled Buckskin coats | Tokens + $950 | For fun |
The Toxic Moonshine pamphlet (1 token + $500) also unlocks in the early ranks, at rank 5 at the latest depending on the source. Along the way the role adds an extra buyer (rank 7 or 9 depending on the source), a few dances and more cosmetics such as the Nevin Hipflask or the Darrow Buckle. Where a token cost isn't given here, it's because sources disagree: trust Maggie's menu.
Must-haves
Ranked from most to least important.
1. The Polished Copper Upgrade (rank 10, 3 tokens + $875). This is what gives you strong moonshine, the only kind that really pays. Rough figures for a batch delivered with no breakage:
| Moonshine strength | Upgrade required | Sale of one batch |
|---|---|---|
| Weak | None | Under $100 |
| Average | Condenser Upgrade | Around $140 to $175 |
| Strong | Polished Copper Upgrade | Around $220 to $250 with a good flavor |
2. The Condenser Upgrade (rank 5, 2 tokens + $825). It nearly doubles your sales from rank 5, and above all it's required to install the Polished Copper. The two upgrades cost $1,700 in total: that's the real entry price of the role.
3. The Wild Creek (rank 6) and Spiced Island (rank 12) recipes, both free. These are two flavors from the best-paying tier. Each needs a collectible ingredient: Creek Plum for the first, Caribbean Rum for the second. Each buyer only wants certain flavors, so the more recipes you own, the better your chances of selling at the top price.
4. Master Distiller (rank 15, free). Production drops from 30, 45 and 60 minutes (weak, average, strong) to 24, 36 and 48 minutes. On strong moonshine, that's twelve minutes saved on every batch.
5. The Ingredients Satchel Upgrade (rank 7, free). More ingredients on you, so fewer trips back and forth to flavor your batches.
6. The Berry Cobbler recipe (rank 2, free). One more flavor very early in the role. Modest, but it already widens your list of possible buyers.
Maggie's story missions: don't put them off
Moonshiner was the first role to get its own series of story missions, five in total, playable solo or in co-op. You help Maggie settle the score with those who tried to take her down, and finding proper cutscenes and well-drawn characters in the middle of a production role is a real treat.
Work through them as soon as they're available, because they pay off:
- Two extra recipes: Apple Berry Crumb along the way, then Agarita Sunrise, a top-tier flavor, at the end of the story.
- Cheaper mash: the story lowers the base price of mash for good.
Between batches, Maggie's Bootlegger missions, such as sabotaging a rival's still or clearing a revenue agent roadblock, each grant a $10 or $20 discount on your next mash. Use the discount right away: it doesn't last.
What to skip or buy last
- The Bar Expansion ($950, 1 token): it earns neither cash nor XP. That said, watching the room fill up with patrons while a batch distills is a nicely done touch of atmosphere. Pick it up once the still is paid for.
- The Band Expansion ($850, rank 5): a country band you and your friends can play in. Charming, not profitable.
- Bar décor: the Floral, Hunter and Refined themes cost 10 to 15 gold bars. Your gold has better things to do.
- The Toxic Moonshine pamphlet ($500, 1 token): it teaches you to craft the bottle that releases a toxic cloud on impact. But Maggie already sells it for $5 apiece: the pamphlet can wait.
- Flammable Moonshine ($20): alcohol you pour and then set alight. Fun, anecdotal.
- Outfits, the Ivers Saddle, Levens Gun Belt, Nevin Hipflask, Darrow Buckle, the Sawed-Off Shotgun variant: cosmetics. Keep your tokens until the still is complete.
- Norfolk Roadsters: a breed reserved for Moonshiners, in three tiers (ranks 1, 10 and 20). Nothing urgent if your horse suits you.
What about the Navy Revolver? It arrived with the Moonshiners update in December 2019, but it isn't tied to the role: you buy it from any gunsmith for $275.
The order to spend your first tokens
At two tokens per rank, you'll always have enough to unlock the still on time. The real brake is cash.
- Ranks 1 to 4: buy nothing from Maggie. Work through the story missions, sell your weak moonshine and put $825 aside. Your other roles will help.
- Rank 5: the Condenser Upgrade (2 tokens, $825), the same day.
- Ranks 6 to 9: save $875. Make use of the Wild Creek recipe from rank 6 if you have Creek Plums.
- Rank 10: the Polished Copper Upgrade (3 tokens, $875). From then on, only produce strong moonshine.
- Only after that: the bar, then the band, then cosmetics and horses.
How these items help outside the role
- The bigger Ingredients (rank 7) and Materials (rank 17) satchels serve all your crafting, whatever role you're running that day.
- Toxic Moonshine and Flammable Moonshine are weapons you can use anywhere, on bounties and missions alike.
- The bar is a place of your own where you can invite other players.
- The link with the Collector works both ways: its flowers and bottles make your best flavors, and the agents you fight on Bootlegger missions are worth looting.
- Norfolk Roadsters remain mounts you can ride anywhere.
The routine reminder
Start a batch of strong moonshine when you log in, flavor it with your best available recipe, head off for bounties or a Treasure Map, then deliver while sticking to the roads: every broken bottle cuts the payout, so avoid rough terrain and clear revenue agent roadblocks before driving your wagon into them. FAQ
At what rank do you unlock strong moonshine as a Moonshiner?
At rank 10, with the Polished Copper Upgrade: $875 and 3 Role Tokens. You first need the Condenser Upgrade, available at rank 5 for $825 and 2 tokens, which gives average-strength moonshine.
Should you buy the Moonshiner bar?
Only if you want it. The Bar Expansion costs $950 and 1 token, and it earns neither cash nor XP. Get both still upgrades first.
Is the Navy Revolver tied to the Moonshiner role?
No. It arrived with the Moonshiners update in December 2019, but you buy it from any gunsmith for $275, with no role rank or token required.
