Quick answer

Red Dead Online is still running in 2026, but without major updates since 2022: the game lives on monthly bonus events. To start well, save your gold bars for roles: Bounty Hunter first (15 gold bars, in Rhodes), then Trader (15 gold bars) and Collector (15 gold bars). Complete at least one Daily Challenge every day to keep your streak and earn gold.

Sharing a campfire with your posse by a lake, running into a gang of players on a snowy trail, watching the sun go down over Big Valley between two contracts: Red Dead Online runs on one of the most detailed open worlds ever made, and you feel it every time you ride out. It's the multiplayer side of Red Dead Redemption 2: the same open world, but with your own character, a separate economy and roles to level up. It comes with RDR2 and has also been sold as a standalone game since December 2020. Here's how to get started efficiently in 2026 without wasting your gold.

The state of the game in 2026

Let's be upfront. On July 7, 2022, Rockstar posted a community update explaining it had been steadily moving development resources toward the next Grand Theft Auto. For Red Dead Online, that meant no more major themed content updates; instead, Rockstar said it would "build upon existing modes and add new Telegram Missions", alongside seasonal events and quality-of-life improvements. The last big expansion is still Blood Money, released in July 2021.

The game isn't dead, though. Servers are up, Rockstar keeps running monthly events with double or triple rewards on selected activities, and four new Telegram Missions (Strange Tales of the West) arrived in July 2025. In August 2026, for example, Telegram Missions and Collector set sales were paying triple. Just don't expect new roles or new areas.

The right habit: every month, check which activities are boosted and play those first. Same effort, two to three times the payout.

Cash vs gold bars: what you need to know

Red Dead Online has two currencies:

  • Cash (RDO$): you earn it everywhere (missions, hunting, sales, roles). It buys weapons, ammo, clothing and horses once your rank unlocks them.
  • Gold Bars: much rarer. You earn gold nuggets, and 100 nuggets automatically turn into one bar. Gold is mainly used to buy roles and some customization items (clothing, weapons, horse tack, camp) that are gold-only.

The golden rule (pun intended): don't spend your first bars on cosmetics. Save them for roles, which is what really moves your account forward. Role prices regularly go on sale: check the in-game catalogue before buying.

The 5 roles (Frontier Pursuits) and their cost

RoleStarter itemWhere to get itStandard price

CollectorCollector's BagMadam Nazar15 gold bars
MoonshinerMoonshining ShackMaggie Fike, at Emerald Ranch25 gold bars

Each role has its own ranks (20 base ranks), which unlock tools and skills. Here's how each one pays.

Bounty Hunter

Head to Rhodes to meet the Legendary Bounty Hunter and buy the license. If you skipped the cutscene, you can also buy it from any Bounty Board. From there, you pick up contracts on those boards, found near law offices, post offices and train stations. Targets pay cash and gold, more if you bring them in alive, and the payout goes up if you take your time before the timer runs out. Legendary Bounties are tougher and pay significantly more. Grab the Reinforced Lasso and the Bounty Wagon early so your targets can't escape.

Trader

This is a camp business with Cripps. You hunt, donate carcasses and pelts at the Butcher's Table, Cripps turns them into goods, then you deliver them by wagon. Two tips: distant deliveries pay more than local ones, and upgrading your wagon (medium, then large) is the best investment in the role, since a full wagon pays far more. Progressing as a Trader is also how you unlock Moonshiner.

Collector

Buy the bag from Madam Nazar, then hunt for tarot cards, coins, arrowheads, jewelry and more to sell her complete sets. The two tools to unlock first are the Pennington Field Shovel and the Metal Detector: without them, you can't dig up the most valuable items. Nazar also sells Treasure Maps that point you to search areas.

Moonshiner

Once you've made enough progress as a Trader, Cripps introduces you to Maggie Fike at Emerald Ranch. You buy a shack in one of five locations (Bayou Nwa, Grizzlies, Hennigan's Stead, The Heartlands, Tall Trees), recruit a cook, Marcel, then distill and sell your product through delivery missions. It's the priciest role, so keep it for later.

Naturalist

At the Strawberry Welcome Center, Harriet Davenport sells you the kit. You can study animals, sedate them to take samples or photograph them for her, or hunt them instead and sell their pelts to Gus Macmillan. Careful: Harriet really doesn't like it when you kill animals, and she'll let you know. It's arguably the role that best shows off the game's wildlife, best observed through binoculars before you touch it.

What order to buy roles in

  1. Bounty Hunter: profitable from the start, it pays gold and eventually earns back its cost.
  2. Trader: a camp income that runs while you do other things, and your way into Moonshiner.
  3. Collector: you can do it in the background while riding around and doing other activities.
  4. Moonshiner, then Naturalist: once you have gold bars to spare.

Of course, if a monthly event boosts a specific role, it can be worth switching the order.

Daily Challenges and streaks

Daily Challenges are the most reliable way to earn gold without spending real money. Every day you get a set of general challenges plus challenges for each role, and each one pays gold. The real bonus is the streak: complete at least one challenge per day, and a gold multiplier increases with each week of streak, up to the fourth. Exact amounts have changed over the years, so check the challenges screen in game. Miss a single day and the streak starts over.

Telegram Missions

Telegram Missions are the content Rockstar has kept adding since 2022. Pick up telegrams at a Post Office or from your Camp Lockbox, then launch them from your Satchel, under Documents. They're often boosted during monthly events, which makes them a great source of cash and XP for beginners.

What about the Outlaw Pass?

The Outlaw Pass, Red Dead Online's take on a battle pass, is a thing of the past: it launched in 2019, then gave way to the Quick Draw Club passes with Blood Money in 2021. Today, most rewards come through monthly events and challenges.

Horse, weapons and posse: good habits

  • Your first horse: you pick it during the first mission, Honor Among Horse Thieves. Choose one you like, you'll keep it for a while. To go further, our guide to the best horses in RDR2 explains breeds and bonding.
  • Hunting weapons: every animal has its weapon. The Varmint Rifle is made for small game and gives clean kills, ideal for Trader materials and perfect pelts.
  • Posse: play in a group whenever you can. Posse members each earn a cut of bounty rewards, and big contracts become much easier.
  • Defensive mode: switch it on in the online options. It heavily limits what other players can do to you (no auto-aim lock-on, no lasso). Handy for grinding in peace in a public session.
