The Gulag in Warzone: how it works

Quick answer
On your first elimination in Battle Royale, you're sent to the Gulag for a 1v1 duel: win and you redeploy onto the map; lose and you wait for a teammate to buy you back. If the timer runs out on a tie, a flag spawns to capture as a tiebreaker.
The Gulag is one of Warzone's signature mechanics: a second chance on your first elimination. Here's how it works and how to win it.
What is the Gulag?
In Battle Royale, when you die for the first time, you're not out: you're sent to the Gulag for a duel. Simple stakes: win and you redeploy onto the map; lose and you rely on your teammates to bring you back.
How the duel plays out
- It's a 1-on-1 against another player awaiting redeployment.
- Loadouts are preset and identical for both: no loadout advantage, skill decides.
- On a tie when the timer runs out, a flag spawns in the center: first to capture it wins.
- Your teammates can cheer you on (and sometimes throw you items depending on the season) from the stands.
Our tips to win your Gulag
- Listen for footsteps and play angles: the arena is small, sound is king (see our audio settings).
- Don't rush in blind: gather info, use cover.
- If the timer runs low, race to the flag: many Gulags are won there.
- Stay calm, it's a pure duel and panic loses it.
After the Gulag
- Win → you redeploy (often by parachute) near your team.
- Loss → a teammate must buy you back at a Buy Station. Past a certain point in the match, the Gulag closes: then it's a buyback or a redeploy objective.

FAQ
What is the Gulag for?
It's your second chance: a 1v1 on your first death. The winner redeploys with no buyback.
What happens if you lose?
You don't return alone: a teammate must buy you back (Buy Station) or complete a redeploy objective. The Gulag eventually closes late in the match.
