Quick answer

In Season 5 Battle Royale, the winning combo: the AN-94 (the number one assault rifle after its buff) as your long-range primary + an aggressive SMG (Ryden 45K, VST or REV-46) as your close-range secondary. For sniper support, the Strider 300 remains the best one-shot. The XM4 (carried over from BO6) is still playable and easy, but off-meta.

The Warzone meta is the set of most effective weapons at any given moment. It shifts every patch: a buffed gun climbs, a nerfed gun falls. Here's the state of play in Season 5, updated September 2, 2026, cross-checked across CODMunity, wzranked and WZStats.

The absolute meta right now

Only six weapons truly stand out (everything else, however good, sits a notch below):

  • AN-94 (AR) — the number one of Season 5 after its buff, king of long range.
  • REV-46 (SMG) — one of the highest usage rates, lethal in close range.
  • VST (SMG) — the most consistent SMG this patch.
  • Ryden 45K (SMG) — climbed to the top, very easy to use.
  • MK35 ISR (AR) — the number two at long range.
  • Strider 300 (sniper) — the best one-shot.

The backbone of any serious BR loadout: a long-range AR + an aggressive SMG, rounded out by a sniper.

The best assault rifles

The AN-94 jumped ahead of the pack after its buff (headshot multiplier, ADS, recoil). Behind it, the MK35 ISR holds the number two spot. The DS20 Mirage (the easiest) and the FG42 — strong at launch then nerfed — remain excellent alternatives, as does the MXR-17, also nerfed and dropped down.

The best SMGs (close range)

The absolute close-range meta is the trio Ryden 45K + VST + REV-46, all buffed in Season 5. The Carbon 57 and Dravec 45, nerfed this patch, drop to alternatives — see the Carbon 57 guide and Dravec 45 guide.

Snipers and long range

The meta bolt-actions deliver the one-shot under the right conditions:

  • Strider 300 (the best), then VS Recon (semi-auto) and Hawker HX as one-shot alternatives.

The winning Season 5 loadout

The duo to copy without thinking: AN-94 (primary) + Ryden 45K (secondary). The AN-94 holds long range, the Ryden cleans up close range. Add a Strider 300 if you play very long range. The exact build for each weapon is in the meta loadouts tool.

What changed in Season 5

The patch reshuffled the deck:

  • New weapon: the FG42 (strong at launch, then nerfed mid-season).
  • Buffs: AN-94, M15 Mod 0, DS20 Mirage, REV-46, VST.
  • Nerfs: Carbon 57, AK-27, MXR-17, X9 Maverick, Dravec 45.

The full breakdown is in our Warzone patch notes.

Carry-forward guns worth using

Warzone runs on carry-forward: guns from Black Ops 6, MW3 and MW2 stay playable, even outside the top meta (ranked by stats). The XM4 or Kilo 141 (BO6) remain easy and viable in a pinch. The XM4 even has its own full loadout guide — off-meta, but easy and always playable.

How to pick by role

  • Carrying the team from range? Long-range AR (AN-94 / MK35 ISR) + sniper.
  • You're the aggressor? Close SMG (Ryden 45K / VST) + the AN-94 as secondary.
  • New to the game? Play it easy: Ryden 45K or DS20 Mirage, easy to handle, instant results.

The right habit: check the patches

The meta is never fixed. Before each session, a glance at the Warzone patch notes tells you what got buffed or nerfed. And to convert the advantage, dial in your best Warzone controller settings.
